Connie’s Diary – Weeks of Freedom 2 and 3
Mentors and SponsorsWeek 2 of Freedom:
Projects … projects … projects. After leaving my job at Merill Lynch as Director and Chief Operating Officer for Campus Recruiting, I finally have the time and energy to devote myself to numerous projects that were on the backburner while I was working. First up, decluttering my house.
Today it’s the walk-in closet. I didn’t think that 100 empty hangers could actually fit on my husband’s side of the closet. I wonder if the dry cleaners could use them … got to save the Earth from wire hangers! I found some interesting things on the shelves in there that I had not seen in ages, like my husband’s Movado watch that has been in hiding for two years. I also found some other strange things taking up a lot of room in there, like bags of unmatched socks. Well, they are history!
Next is the paper work piled up in the kitchen – these papers multiply like rabbits! I’m becoming a cleaning tornado and my paper shredder is working overtime. Thank God I’m not working anymore! Why did I wait so long to do this? I’m feeling giddy with all of this spare time and the sense of possibility.

A Global Fight For Women’s Rights
NewsImagine a world where waxing your eyebrows is taboo, going out with your girlfriends is prohibited and covering yourself in black cloth from head to toe is mandatory. These restrictions are put on women in Saudi Arabia every day.
Women are not allowed to drive a car because men will be distracted on the road. Women are not allowed to go out in a group without a male guardian because of the potential chaos that could erupt. Women have limited employment options, are segregated from men in classrooms and are only taught by male professors through television monitors. Women are only allowed to see female doctors in hospitals.

Healthier AND Wealthier?
NewsIt’s the modern Faustian bargain – furthering your career at the expense of your health. Pizza and Chinese from Seamless web at your desk, all-nighters working on a huge deal, constant travel, no time for the gym even though it’s in your building – do these unhealthy behaviors sound familiar? As a personal trainer, all too often I work with clients who’ve traded their health for the chance to get ahead in their careers.
But is this really necessary? Not necessarily, according to scientists.

The Revolving Door of Public/Private Sector Careers
Next LevelI want you to engage in a little thought experiment with me. Think back to the time when you applied to college or graduate school. Now think about those essays you wrote, earnestly explaining to the admissions officers how you needed to obtain a degree from their university. If you were like me, chances are pretty good that your essays were filled with visions of social justice, civil rights, helping the poor or serving the public good in some other quantifiable way. Chances are not good that you wrote something along the lines of, “I need to attend your university so that, immediately upon graduation, I can work for a huge corporation and make tons of money.”

Companies with Women on the Board Perform Better
NewsGood news from the boardroom this week. A new study concluded that Fortune 500 companies with more women on their boards perform better financially than companies with fewer female directors. The study, The Bottom Line: Corporate Performance and Women’s Representation on Boards, was conducted by the non-profit organization Catalyst, which works to expand opportunities for women in business. It found that, although women only occupy 14.6% of seats on the board of directors of Fortune 500 companies, they have a major impact on a company’s financial success.
