A few weeks ago, we ran a story about the Pace Law School New Directions program for lawyers returning to practice after taking some time off. It turns out that a similar program exists for women returning to careers in finance. Sponsored by Goldman Sachs, the program is also called New Directions. The Goldman Sachs program began in 2006, and the Pace Law School program was launched in May 2007. At The Glass Hammer, we are just pleased that such excellent opportunities for returners exist in both law and finance. Last week, we had a chance to sit down with Elana Weinstein, Vice President in the Office of Global Leadership and Diversity at Goldman Sachs, and discuss their New Directions program.

Women’s Executive Circle of New York (WECNY) has collaborated with Cornell University’s Institute for Women and Work to help improve the standing of women in business leadership positions. Together, we have conducted a quantitative research study that evaluates the state of women in executive positions in the top 100 public companies headquartered in NY. The survey will be discussed with a top panel.

In a recent interview with a Glass Hammer contributor, Orman explained that she didn’t buy into gender differences regarding how men and women think about and handle their money until five years into her Emmy Award-winning financial show, The Suze Orman Show, on CNBC. After listening to five years of callers’ questions and observing her own friends’ relationships with money, she began examining the differences in how women and men handle money.

As you might imagine from their upwardly mobile titles, both books provide advice and encouragement to women looking to move up in the ranks at work, and harness the power and confidence to succeed in life. Sort of like the literary version of buying a coveted handbag or treating yourself to some full-fat ice cream, both of these books are a great start to a career pick-me-up.
