The Breast Cancer Care Carol Service by Candlelight is a truly magical event and the highlight of our Christmas festivities.
The evening is held at St Paul’s, a beautiful Victorian church in Knightsbridge which looks picture perfect lit by hundreds of candles.
Guests are invited to join us, our celebrity readers and both adult and junior choirs, to fill the church with Christmas carols and plenty of festive spirit!
With 800 guests in attendance, the night is a fantastic mix of Breast Cancer Care supporters, including high net worth individuals; our corporate partners, celebrity guests and our patron, Cherie Booth who regularly attends and makes the welcoming address.
Stars that have captivated our guests in previous years include Catherine Tate, Michael Aspel, Alison Steadman, Cilla Black and Joan Bakewell. Last year Trinny Woodall, Lesley Joseph and Nigel Harman read especially selected Christmas themed poems and prose and we were especially lucky to have Classical BRIT nominee, Alfie Boe perform exclusively ‘O Holy Night’.
The fantastic L’Inviti Singers from the Wedding Music Company and the Westminster Under School Junior boys choir both join us at the Carol Service by Candlelight, and have become firm favourites at the event.
After the service, guests are welcomed to gather outside the church for complimentary wine, mince pies, and hot roasted chestnuts. We also have the perfect opportunity to stock up on extra Christmas gifts and decorations at our gift stall located just outside the church portico.
For guests wishing to continue the merriment, we extend the invitation to attend the Champagne Supper at the Caledonian Club, a private members club, just a short walk from the church after the service.
As a fundraising event the Carol Service by Candlelight and Champagne Supper enables Breast Cancer Care to continue to provide information and support to anyone affected by breast cancer.

Happy Holidays from glasshammer2.wpengine.com
NewsIt’s been a tumultuous year for most people and, since August, the financial markets have gone from the sublime to the surreal. But it has been an amazing year for theglasshammer.com.
We turned one year old in September, and won blog of the year in November. We launched a job board in April and a social network in August for you to discuss topics with one another.
Keep sharing your stories with us. We hope to keep inspiring you by showing you there are many women with their own way to break the glass ceiling. We want to help you get to where you want to be – for some that may mean the corner office, while for others it may mean finding a work-life balance or even a new career.
This year I have loved reading about your individual paths to the top. And I have been lucky enough to have met many wonderful women out there who are calling the shots – you’ve turned out to be very warm and kind with interesting hobbies and lives. It is truly a pleasure to be the publisher and founder of theglasshammer.com.
Thanks to PwC and Goldman Sachs for being our founding sponsors, as well as some of our other supporters – Commerzbank, UBS, Pimco, BNP Paribas.
Have a great festive holiday and raise your glass to a happy and prosperous new year in ‘09.

Devenney is part of a growing trend of young professionals in their twenties and early thirties who are trying to make a difference in the world of non-profit organizations.
The arrangement between the OCNA and Devenney is a win-win. The organization wants to tap into the energy that younger professionals can bring to the cause and Devenney is looking to broaden her skills and network beyond her work experience.

Thriving in the Downturn
Featured, Office PoliticsGender matters. It matters to all of us, no matter what we believe we think. It matters when we react to the associate at the bank, or the customer service representative on the phone. It matters when we mentally note that our child’s teacher is (atypically) male, or that our construction engineer is (atypically) female. It shouldn’t matter but it does.
This issue is at the core of a recent article on the news page of the UK-based Management Issues site discussed the “thickening” of the glass ceiling in response to the global economic downturn. The article highlights the findings of a 2008 study by the UK management consulting firm Hudson, which concluded that many women may be held back from the top of companies because of their tendency to be “altruistic, people-oriented, co-operative and open” even as it acknowledges that these traits are helpful in leading modern corporations. In troubled economic times, the report states, corporations tend to fall back on the “traditionally ‘male” traits of decisiveness, persuasiveness and leadership in order to survive” leaving women struggling to reach the highest levels yet again.

The Glass Ceiling in Australia
Breaking the Glass CeilingLiving in New York, it’s easy to forget—especially in this economy—that women everywhere are struggling to break through the glass ceiling. As hard as it may be for women here in the United States, it turns out that it is even harder for women in Australia. A recent study, supported by the Australian government, has recently found that Australia is trailing the United States, Great Britain, South Africa and New Zealand in regards to women breaking into the ranks of senior management.
This survey had a number of interesting comparisons, highlighting that while 54.5 percent of Australian ASX (Australian Stock Exchange) 200 companies have at least one woman in an executive position, this compares poorly to the United States, where 85.2 percent of companies have at least one woman in an executive position. In Canada, that figure is 65.6 percent; in Great Britain, it is 60 percent; and in South Africa, 59.3 percent.

Inform, Inspire, Persuade: Communicating Effectively with Clients and Peers
Expert AnswersNo matter how profound a presentation’s message is, it can be lost in a moment – buried beneath a web of uninspiring imagery and the monotonous recital of text on a slide. Many of us will be required to make a visual presentation at some point, but unlike verbal communication, which is practiced from day one, thinking visually isn’t easy, natural or commonly taught in schools or business programs.
The quality of your presentation depends on interaction – the interaction you have with your slides, and the interaction between your audience and the message you are attempting to deliver. If you merely stand and read bullet points, your audience will likely be disengaged. If you speak in concise terms while your slides are cluttered with text, your audience will be torn between listening and reading, and most likely won’t give either very much attention. As the presenter, the quality of your presentation is your responsibility, and learning to create visual stories that connect with your audience is imperative – especially in consideration of increasing competitive pressure on a global scale.
