What is a leader? What role does leadership play in driving success and bringing about change? Are you a leader?

As managers, counselors, advisors, employees and employers, lawyers wear multiple hats. Each role requires leadership in some capacity. Often the role is that of “driver” and rarely one of “passenger.” Exploring leadership styles and what makes leaders successful, the 2009 Women on the Move CLE program, Leaders: In the Driver’s Seat, features sessions on leadership skills, ethics, and labor and employment law.

Presented for the second time in Albany, this year’s program includes a networking luncheon. Registration for this program is limited and early registration is essential. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from renowned panelists.

Performance reviews are rarely pleasant. Even when the feedback is positive, the whole process always feels forced and awkward. Most managers are inadequately trained on how best to deliver a review, never mind how to mentor and monitor professional development.

Then there are those horrible forms to fill out. Three pages of multiple choice questions or sliding scale assessments followed by two blank lines for providing comments, does not help facilitate meaningful dialogue between the reviewer and the reviewee.

Now there is another reason for employees, particularly female employees, to dread the performance review, or talent management assessment, as it is referred to by human resource types. Catalyst, the organization that provides research, information, and advice about women at work, recently released a study “Cascading Gender Biases, Compounding Effects: An Assessment of Talent Management Systems.”

President Obama ran one of the most well-executed, thoughtful campaigns in history. Aside from a quick news cycle covering his unfortunate “sweetie” comment, he almost always said the right thing – on message, positive and inspiring. But less than 100 days into his presidency, Obama made a gaffe on the well-watched Jay Leno show when he mentioned The Special Olympics in reference to his campaign bowling excursion.

“We all put our foot in our mouth,” says Lee McEnany Caraher, president of Double Forte, a marketing and communications firm. “Sometimes we know right away, and sometimes other people bring it to our attention.”Genevieve Haldeman, vice president, Corporate Communications, for Symantec, agrees. “As much as we try to be careful, I think we’ve all said something that we immediately regretted. I think how I have handled it has depended on each situation. I may make a statement to apologize or clarify my intent immediately, or may follow up after the fact to make a more personal apology. It depends on each situation and whether or not a public apology is the best way to go. “

Most professional women concur that everybody’s done it said something that alienated others without meaning too. So why are some people able to apologize and move on while others are haunted by their inappropriateness?

As a career coach and recruiter, I have followed many careers. I have also seen many examples of networking success: A PhD in molecular biology makes key venture capital contacts (and eventually lands a VC job) after tracking down a fellow PhD in molecular biology who is now a senior banker;

An art assistant lands an art director position at a national magazine, after regular contact with her former boss (now editor of the magazine) puts her in the right place at the right time; A management consultant transitions into recruiting after a former colleague hires her into her search firm; A little league basketball coach gets a job interview at one of his dream firms because it turns out he is coaching the son of a top executive there.
