WITI’s Wisdom
by Meg Shannon (New York City)
Women make up an increasing percent of consumers for technology. Companies designing and selling these products would be well-served to employ professionals who can think like their buyers, say some organizations.
The mission of Women in Technology International—WITI—is to “level the playing field for women and open up opportunities through a global connection of professional, tech savvy women committed to mutual support,” according to Carolyn Leighton, WITI chairman and founder.
Even though there have been campaigns targeted at school-age girls to encourage them to enter these fields, the tech sector continues to be male dominated, experts say. Although tech companies have been beefing up their female work force as part of a movement toward overall diversity, women tell WITI that they still have to fight harder to be taken seriously and to be considered for executive level positions in technology, says Leighton.
“We are committed to increasing the number of female role models through increasing the visibility of the talents and contributions of women through our media outlets and award programs, such as the WITI Hall of Fame, “ says Leighton.
WITI holds conferences and events like the Hall of Fame—which spotlights successful women in tech businesses—to support women in technology. Their next event is WITI’s 2008 Women and Technology Summit: Women’s Leadership Shaping the Future, scheduled for October 12 -15 at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara, CA. The organization describes the summit as an opportunity for women—and men—to make powerful connections, be inspired, and leave with knowledge and techniques that will make a huge difference in their businesses and careers.
“The women selected for 2008 induction to the WITI Hall of Fame are leaders committed to improving the status of humanity for future generations. WITI Hall of Fame winners stand as role models for the next generation of women”—fundamental criteria for consideration for induction into the WITI Hall of Fame according to Leighton. She adds that these women in particular are unique in that they are specifically women pioneers shaping the future through science and technology.
“Joining organizations committed to helping you succeed is the most important step a woman can take for business, career and profession,” says Leighton. “Those relationships are the most direct route to job and business opportunities, and help women make the best strategic decisions at any point in their career. “
