Forbes List – Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the World

Forbes Magazine has recently named its 100 Most Powerful Women in the world for 2008. Women in law and business are well-represented on the list, with six of the top ten women working as CEOs or chairmen of major international corporations. The top ten most powerful women, as ranked by Forbes, are as follows:

1 Angela Merkel – Chancellor of Germany
2 Wu Yi – Vice premier of China
3 Ho Ching – Chief executive, Temasek Holdings, Singapore
4 Condoleezza Rice – Secretary of State, United States
5 Indra K. Nooyi – Chairman, chief executive, PepsiCo, U.S.
6 Sonia Gandhi – President, Congress Party, India
7 Cynthia Carroll – Chief Executive, Anglo American, U.K.
8 Patricia A. Woertz – Chairman, Archer Daniels Midland, U.S.
9 Irene Rosenfeld – Chairman, chief executive, Kraft Foods, U.S.
10 Patricia Russo – Chief executive, Alcatel-Lucent, U.S.

47 out of the top 100 women came from the corporate world, including Anne Mulcahy (13), CEO of Xerox, Anne Lauvergeon (14), CEO of Areva, Mary Sammons (15), Chairman, CEO and President of Rite Aid Corp., and Angela Braly (16), CEO and President of WellPoint.

Top women in finance to watch include Pamela Daley, the top M&E lawyer at General Electric, Gwyneth Ketterer, COO of Bear Stearns Merchant Banking, Marge Magner, co-head of private equity firm Brysam Global Partners, Susan Saltzbart Kilsby, Chairman of European M&E at Credit Suisse, Dina Dublon, former Executive Vice President and CFO for JPMorgan Chase, Elizabeth Weatherman, Managing Director at Warburg Pincus, Zoe Cruz, Co-President of Morgan Stanley and the most senior woman on Wall Street at age 34, Lisa Carnoy, co-head of equity capital markets at Merrill Lynch, and Nancy Peretsman, a partner at media and technology investment bank Allen and Co., who advised on Rupert Murdoch’s bid for Dow Jones.
